How it is worked out
- Hours in a month: hours per day × days per week × 52 weeks ÷ 12 months. A full week of 8 hours a day for 5 days is 173.33 hours a month.
- Monthly wage: hours in the month × the hourly rate. At R30.23 an hour that is R5 239.77.
- UIF: you deduct 1% of the wage from the worker's pay and add another 1% yourself, so R52.40 each at that wage. Wages above R17 712 a month only count up to R17 712.
- Your cost: the wage plus your 1% UIF, which is R5 292.17 a month or R63 506.04 a year.
The minimum wage
From 1 March 2026 domestic workers must be paid at least R30.23 for every ordinary hour worked, the same as the national minimum wage. The calculator warns you if the rate you enter is lower.
