The rules behind it
| Leave | What the law gives |
|---|---|
| Annual leave | 21 consecutive days a year on full pay: 15 working days for a 5 day week, 18 for a 6 day week. It builds up at 1 day for every 17 days worked, and must be taken within 6 months after the leave year ends |
| Sick leave | The days normally worked in 6 weeks, for each 3 year cycle. In the first 6 months, 1 day for every 26 days worked. You may ask for a medical certificate after 2 days in a row, or more than twice in 8 weeks |
| Family responsibility | 3 paid days a year for a sick child or a death in the family, once employed for over 4 months and working at least 4 days a week |
| Maternity and parental | Changed by the Constitutional Court in October 2025: parents now share 4 months and 10 days between them until new law is passed. Check the current rules |
